If you love caves, the sea, and postcard-worthy landscapes, make sure to add this place to your list: the Benagil Caves in Portugal’s Algarve region. This natural formation, sculpted by the erosion of the Atlantic Ocean, has become one of the most photographed spots in Portugal. And for good reason: its round vault with a large skylight in the ceiling looks like a cathedral carved by nature itself.
¿De qué hablamos en este artículo?
ToggleIn this article, we’ll explain how to visit this Algarve icon and what other activities you can enjoy to make your getaway unforgettable.
Where are the Benagil Caves?
The caves are located in the small fishing village of Benagil, on Portugal’s southern coast, between the beaches of Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra — right in the heart of the Algarve. What’s interesting is that you can’t access them on foot: since the cave is inside the sea, it’s only reachable by water.
How to Visit the Benagil Caves
There’s no direct access from land, so if you want to explore the cave from the inside, you’ll need to choose one of these options:
1. Kayak or paddleboard
Perfect if you’re looking for an active, eco-friendly experience. You can rent a kayak or board directly from Benagil Beach and reach the cave in just a few minutes. However, this is only recommended in calm seas and if you have some experience.
2. Tour boat
The most comfortable and safest option. Organized departures are available from various Algarve towns such as Portimão, Albufeira, or Lagos. Most tours include stops at other sea caves, and some allow swimming or anchoring nearby.
3. Swimming (not recommended)
Although mentioned in some travel guides, swimming to the cave is not recommended for safety reasons: strong currents, boat traffic, and changing tides make it dangerous.
💡 Tip: If possible, visit early in the morning or at sunset. There are fewer crowds, and the light shining through the skylight creates a magical spectacle.
What Makes Benagil Cave So Special?
The main attraction is its unique geological structure: a natural dome with a large opening in the ceiling that lets in sunlight. Inside, a small beach of golden sand awaits, surrounded by high limestone walls. Most boat tours don’t allow you to step inside, but some kayak excursions do — depending on sea conditions.
Plus, the surrounding area is dotted with other caves, cliffs, and hidden beaches, making the whole experience much more than just a single stop.
What Else to Do Nearby
Make the most of your trip to Benagil by discovering other Algarve gems:
- Praia da Marinha: One of Europe’s most beautiful beaches, just 10 minutes away by car.
- Seven Hanging Valleys Trail: A spectacular coastal path connecting Benagil with other beaches and viewpoints.
- Local seafood tasting at the port restaurants of Carvoeiro or Ferragudo.
